John Michael Spengler, also known as Michael Spengler, was born 7 December 1760 at Northampton County, Pennsylvania, a son of Christian Spangler, Sr., and Anna Maria.
He appeared as a private in the company of Captain John Ritter of the Third Battalion of the Northampton County Militia under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Nicholas Kern, in a class roll dated 1781. He appeared in the same company and battalion, rank and commanding officers, in a class roll dated 1782. On both occasions he was assigned to the fifth class of the company.
He married Anna Catharina Brown, a daughter of John Adam Brown and Juliana Catharine, 5 April 1784, at Northampton County. They had seven known children: John Adam [also known as Adam], Anna Maria wife of Henry Snyder, Johannes, Susanna wife of John Erdman, John Michael [also known as Michael], Catharine wife of John Harger, and Daniel. The record of baptism of some of the children of John Michael and Anna Catharina appear in the registers of the Dryland Union Lutheran Church.
Anna Catharina Brown Spengler, wife of John Michael, died at the family homestead at Lower Nazareth Township, Northampton County, 17 April 1837. She was laid to rest at the cemetery of the Dryland Union Lutheran Church at Hecktown, Pennsylvania.
The Last Will and Testament of John Michael Spengler, as Michael Spengler, of record at Will Book 6, Pages 405-407, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, was made 29 August 1846. The Will names his children Catharine Harger, Anna Maria Snyder and Michael Spengler, “…the widow and legal heirs of my son Adam Spengler late of Centre County…” and grandchildren Samuel Colver, Lavina Colver Handshoe heirs, and Augustus Spengler and Stephen Spengler, sons of Daniel Spengler deceased.
John Michael Spengler died 24 March 1848 at the family homestead at Lower Nazareth Township. He was laid to rest at the cemetery of the Dryland Union Lutheran Church at Hecktown, Pennsylvania.
