Simon Smith was born 17 February 1759 In Lyme, CT. His wife was Abigail Fowler, who was born on 3 December 1759, there were married 1 January 1784. He died in Westfield, MA on 20 June 1849 and is buried in the Old Burying Ground in Westfield, MA. Simon is the son of Nathan Smith and Elizabeth Starlin. During his time in Westfield, Simon was a tanner by trade. Simon fought in both the Sept 19 and Oct 9, 1777 battles at Saratoga in Gen. Arnold’s division as a private in Capt. Lathrop’s Company in Col. Jonathan Latimer’s Regiment assigned to Gen. Poor’s Continental Brigade. Simon was a Corporal and Sergeant in Capt. Charles Miel’s Company of Gen. David Waterbury’s State Brigade in 1781 assigned to Horseneck, CT. Children of Simon Smith and Abigail Starlin are: Caroline born 2 Oct 1784. Lydia born 26 Feb 1787 and died 25 Nov 1830. Daniel born 28 Apr 1788. John born 9 Mar 1790. Horace born 15 Aug 1792 in Westfield and died 8 Oct 1869 in Westfield, MA. Nathan born 17 Nov 1794 in Westfield and died 13 Mar 1863 in Hebron, CT. Charles born 2 Feb 1797. Hiram born 21 Sep 1800 and died 28 Jul 1887 in Hillsdale, Michigan.

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
