Born on January 5, 1757, James Smith served in the Pennsylvania Line in the Revolutionary War, enlisting at York County, Pennsylvania in Captain David Grier's Company in Colonel Hartley’s Regiment of the York County, Pennsylvania Line; he was in the Battles of Brandywine and Germantown.
He married Jane __ (1757-1842); children: 11, 5 sons and 6 daughters including James, Peter and an unnamed son. He lived in York County, Pennsylvania during the War and moved to St. Clair Township, Columbiana County, Ohio after the War. He was of German descent. He died on May 29, 1845 at 88 years of age and is buried at Long’s Run Cemetery, East Liverpool, Columbiana County, Ohio. He had a headstone. He received a pension for his service.

Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format.
