Author: Derrick W. Spell

George Thomas Sloan was born at County Cork, Ireland, December 3, 1756.  He moved to America as a young man and volunteered for service in the Revolutionary War while crossing the Atlantic.  He entered the naval service, September 10, 1778.  He joined as a Sergeant of Marines on the Frigate Trumbull, commanded by Captain James Nickelson.  After an initial eight month cruise, George was stationed at Boston for three months.  He worked there as a recruiter under the command of Lieutenant Thomas Allen.  He boarded the Trumbull again in September 1779 for another tour as Sergeant of Marines.  On this voyage, George was wounded by a boarding pike during an engagement with the British ship, Watt.

Since George was a practical navigator, he was ordered to board the captured prize ship Hannah in December 1779.  Under the command of master Thomas Wilson, he and eight others sailed the Hannah to the port of Saint Eustatius in the West Indies.  In January 1780, he joined the Frigate Ranger, commanded by Captain Simpson as a gunnery mate.  This final tour ended at Charleston Harbor, May 12, 1780.

After the war, George settled at Spartanburg District, South Carolina.  He married Mary Elizabeth Smith from Virginia, November 20, 1793.  They were the parents of twelve children.  The family moved to Laurens District, South Carolina, in 1818.  George passed away June 9, 1836.  His burial location remains unknown.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
