John Slaughter’s birth (b.) was recorded during 1732 at St. Mark’s Parish, Spotsylvania County (Co.) Virginia (VA) formed 1720 from Essex, King and Queen and King William. Note: Orange Co., (1734) and Culpeper Co., (1749) were formed from Spotsylvania Co., and Madison Co., was formed 1792 from Culpeper. John’s parents were Francis Slaughter (1700-1766), born (b.) Essex Co., death (d.) Culpeper Co., m. 3 Jun 1729 wife (w.) Anne Lightfoot of Spotsylvania Co., a daughter (dau.) of Major Goodrich Lightfoot; source, online, Colonial Families of the United States, 1607-1775 for Francis Slaughter, Vol. V, pgs 460-461. John Slaughter at age, 21 married (m.) Mildred “Milly” Coleman, age 17, a dau. of Robert Coleman. She died at age 22, during 1758. This marriage produced daus., Ann “Nancy” Slaughter; Frances; Lucy and son, Cadwallader (c1756-1816) m. 1st__ Miss Yancy, and 2nd 1770, __Miss Hampton (Aka Sarah “Sallie” Hampton/Hamton) and had Richard, John H. (Aka Hampton) Slaughter (1812-1902), Robert, Edward, Cadwallader (Aka Cad W. Slaughter), and several daughters [Green’s Notes, pg 86]. Cadwallader resettled from the Town of Culpeper after 1790 with his Slaughter family to Mercer Co., Kentucky (KY) prior to his death recorded in 1816; sources, DAR Ancestors #: A161704 and Ancestor #: A105016. A search of Virginia, Marriages of the Northern Neck of Virginia, 1649-1800 for John Slaughter, pg 321 recorded our subject, John, a widower, married a 2nd occasion to Elizabeth Suggett on 18 Dec 1758 at Richmond Co., VA; John Suggett (sec.); the groom was characterized, a son of Francis Slaughter and Anne (Lightfoot) Slaughter; the bride was a dau. of Edgecomb Suggett. John’s marriages produced Lieutenants Robert, John Suggett Slaughter and William that served in the Continental Army at the same time. John’s wife, Mildred Coleman (1736-1758) was a sister of his brother, (Colonel) Francis’s wife, a dau. of Robert Coleman [Green’s Notes, pg 85, did not identify Francis’ wife as Sarah Coleman]; sources, An 18th Century Perspective: Culpeper County, compiled by Mary Stevens Jones, publ. 1976 by the Culpeper Historical Society, Inc., Culpeper, VA, caption – Colonel John Slaughter. pg 65 also, see, Genealogical and Historical Notes on Culpeper County, Virginia by Raleigh Travers Green, Copyright 1900, publ., by Exponent Printing Office, Culpeper, VA, Part I, The Slaughter Family, pgs 85 and 86. Colonel Culpeper Mil. In 1777-8, E.” [Key to Abbreviations for “E.” means, “Index of the Revolutionary records in the Virginia State Archives”, compiled by Dr. H. J. Eckenrode in 1912 and 1914.] For the reader’s understanding, John H. Gwathmey wrote that each County in Virginia, under the Revolutionary set-up, had a County Lieut., who ranked as Colonel, a Lieut. Colonel, a major and a varying number of Captains, Lieuts. Ensigns and Cornets; see, Historical Register of Virginians in the Revolution by John H. Gwathmey, 1938, reprinted by Genealogical Publ., Co., Inc., Baltimore, 1973, Preface, pg vi. At age 64, John Slaughter died on 29 Aug 1796 in St. Mark’s Parish, Culpeper Co., (now, Madison Co.) at Slaughter family farm tract mapped, Stevensburg, and he was buried at the mapped Slaughter Graveyard off [Rt 752 (mapped as, (Slaughter Lane) over Little Crooked Run] from Kirtley Trail and Rt 29, in Madison Co., VA; source, Eugene M. Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
