James Simms appeared before judge Will McTeer on 06Aug1832 in Blount County TN to apply for a pension at age 81 years 4 months and 26 days. He was born in Frederick County VA 11 Mar1751. His first service was six months at Fort Henry, Wheeling on the Ohio in 1777. After moving to Washington Co VA in 1778, Simms was in various militia deployments under Capt Joseph Black, Col Evan Shelby, and Lt Samuel Newell. He was under Capt Robert Craig at the Battle of Kings Mountain. Veterans Andrew Creswell and John McCroskey testified of their service with Simms. James died 29Jul1848 and was buried at Eusebia.
With his wife Elizabeth, James had sons John Simms 1785, William Gray Simms 1795, and Joseph Vance Simms 1800.
