Philip Jacob SCHENCKEL was christened 5 March 1747 in Edenkoben, Bavaria, Germany, the son of Philip Carl SCHENCKEL and Maria Elisabetha ZIMPELMANN. Philip Jacob died circa September 1807 in Lewis Township, Clermont (now Brown) County, Ohio, and was buried near Feesburg, Clermont (now Brown) County, Ohio. He married Maria Juliana BOLENDER.
Philip Jacob Schenckel immigrated to America in 1752 with his parents and one sister. Nineteen years later, a Philip Schenckel (possibly Philip Jacob) and a Christian Schenckel (possibly Philip’s brother) were confirmed at Tulpehocken Church in Pennsylvania along with twenty-two other individuals in the Confirmation Class of 1771. (In 1977, this church was referred to as Tulpehocken Trinity United Church of Christ in Richland, which is currently situated in Millcreek Township, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania.)
In an 1883 history of Dauphin and Lebanon Counties in Pennsylvania, there is a discussion of the preparations made for a possible war with Britain. The members of the Schenckel family (Philip, Jacob, and Chris) who enrolled in Captain Hudson’s Company are most likely Johannes “Han” Philip, Philip Jacob, and Johann Christian, respectively, all sons of Philip Carl Schenckel of Heidelberg Township in Lancaster County. (The township of Heidelberg, located in Lancaster County during the Revolutionary War, became a part of Dauphin County when that county was formed in 1785, and is now located in the southeast corner of Lebanon County, which was formed in 1813 from parts of Dauphin and Lancaster Counties.)
The Shinkle Genealogy includes additional information about Captain Hudson’s Company provided in a letter from Wm. H. Egle, State Librarian, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, dated 24 September 1896. “The Heidelberg Company of Associators, commanded by George Hudson, was called into actual service, and was paid for such service by Pennsylvania. The company did not participate in any engagements.” The muster roll of the Heidelberg Company under Captain George Hudson was also published in 1906 as part of the Pennsylvania Archives Series and in a history of Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, published in 1907.
A Jacob Shenckel is listed under a “Heidelberg [Township] assessment of Nonassociators 1777” tax list which was taken in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Jacob was assessed a tax of £3.10.00 as a nonassociator (i.e. an individual who had not renounced all allegiance to King George III of Great Britain).
Late the following year, Philip Jacob Schenckel subscribed to the oath of allegiance. The list of subscribers was recorded in a Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, deed book.
Lancaster County ss: November 3, 1778. I the subscriber one of the Justices of the Peace for the county of Lancaster do hereby certify that the following is a true list of the Names and Sernames of such persons who have taken and subscribed the Oath of affirmation of Allegiance and Fidellity before me as directed by an act [13 June 1777] of General Assembly at Pennsylvania.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
