Author: Joel Mark Grimmett

Christian Schinkel (Schenckel /Shinkle/Shenkel) was born 10 July 1756 in Heidelburg Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania to Philipp Carl and Maria Elizabetha (Zimpel) Shinkle.

He married Maria Magdalena Leinger and their marriage was blessed with Maria Elisbetha, Maria Katharina, Maria Magdalena, Maria Barbara, John B, and Christian L.

Christian served 1775 as a Private under the command of Captain George Hudson in the Heidelburg Company Militia, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania along with his two brothers, Han and Philipp Jacob Schinkel.  The Company was called into service but did not participate in any engagements.

After the war, Christian and Maria crossed the Alleghenies in wagons to Pittsburgh, then by flatboat to Limestone (Maysville, Kentucky) where Christian left his family to see a location. On 15 June 1805, he purchased from R.C. Jacobs 1,000 acres on Bullskin Creek for $2,000. His ownership of the land gave the name of Shinkle’s Ridge to the section of country lying north of Higginsport. Land was donated for a church, cemetery, and school. Christian’s wife, Maria, died in 1814. Christian then married Mrs. Elizabeth Stayton on 2 October 1817.

He passed this life on 1833 and is buried in the Shinkle’s Ridge Cemetery.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
