Author: Dr. Michael Bernard Gunn
Born in 1750, in Londonderry, Ireland to parents William and Margaret Johnston Sherrard. He served as a Private in the Flying Camp of Pennsylvania and was with Colonel Crawford’s Expedition in Ohio against Sandusky. He Married Mary Cathcart (1751-1833); children: Nancy & Robert. John had one brother, James, and three sisters, Elizabeth, Margaret and Mary. When his father died, John sailed for America in August 1772 on the "Wolf". The ship landed in Philadelphia in October 1772. He spent his first winter there. John set out for land west of the mountains in the spring of 1773.  John was a farmer He Died on April 22, 1809 and first buried at Smithfield Quaker Cemetery, Main Street and Maple Avenue, Smithfield, Jefferson Co., OH 43938. Moved to Union Cemetery Sec. R – Grave lot 52, Steubenville, OH 43952, inside the Sherrand Mausoleum. The marble plaque in the Sherrard Mausoleum for John Sherrard reads, "JOHN SHERRARD, son of WILLIAM & MARGARET JOHNSTON SHERRARD, born later part of 1750 in Ireland near Newton Limavady, died on Richard Hall Farm 2 miles south of Smithfield, Ohio, April 22, 1809"  Steubenville, OH.  Ref : Natl.
