Born on October 23, 1742 in Westfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts to parents John Shepherd (1708-1788) and Elizabeth Noble (1705-1793). He served in the Massachusetts Militia as a Captain; pay roll of officers of a detachment from 3rd Hampshire County Regiment commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Timothy Robinson; detachment marched to Ticonderoga October 21, 1776, to reinforce army by order of General Schuyler. He married 1) Esther Dewey (1744-_) on March 15, 1761, 2) Margaret Gass (1767-_) on December 18, 1800 un Brooke Co., VA ; children: #1 Esther b. 1762, Enoch b. 1765, Anna b. 1767, Rhoda b. 1770, Daniel b. 1772, Laura b. 1775, Luther b. 1777, Huldah b. 1780 and Calvin b. 1783. #2 Elizabeth G. b. 1802, Silas M. b. 1804 and Mary b. 1805. He died at 79 years of age on September 17, 1821 in Marietta, Washington County, Ohio and buried at Mound Cemetery, 5th & Scammel Streets, Marietta, Washington County, OH 45750. Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
