Author: Allyn Eugene Sheldon

John Sheldon was born on 27 February 1748 in Suffield, Connecticut. He was one of nine children born to his parents.

He married Sybel Spear in Suffield, Connecticut, on 20 August 1769. They had the following known children:

  • Marcy or Mary was born on 14 February 1770
  • John was born on 1 November 1771 and married Phebe Mentor.
  • Thaddeus was born on 25 December 1773 and married Ellis Green.
  • Thankful was born on 28 June 1779.
  • Moses was born on 2 December 1782.
  • Chauncey was born on 10 January 1786 and married Lucy Whiting.
  • William was born on 24 August 1788.
  • Submit was born on 6 February 1790 and married Joseph Hastings.
  • Sibbel was born on 2 December 1795.
  • Puilla Mayhew was born on 6 December 1793.

He moved to Rupert, Bennington, Vermont, between 1776 and 1779 and was a member of the Vermont Militia.

He served eleven days in Colonel Ira Allen's Regiment during the Alarms of October 1780, four days guarding prisoners in September 1781, eight days in Ira Allen's Regiment during the Alarms of 1781, and two days in Colonel Ira Allen's Regiment in pursuit of the enemy that took two men captive in May 1782.

The Patriot died on 20 December 1812 in Rupert, Vermont, and was buried in the Rupert Street Cemetery.
