Matthias Shanor 1736 - 1807 The first ancestor of the Shanor family and early settler of Beaver Co. Pa. He was born 1736 of German ancestry in Strassburg,Alsace Lorraine, then under French government. Matthias was with French troops that arrived at Ft. LeBoeuf . Later he was at Ft. Duquesne under M. de Jummonville . After Braddock's defeat in 1775, Matthias joined Adam and Andy Poe & Simon Kenton in the vicinity of Georgetown, Beaver Co. In 1756 Matthias m. Sophronia Fanny Poe , sister of Adam and Andy. Matthias Shanor had a Tomahawk title, which was a tacit agreement among settlers of the western region. His nearest neighbors were seven miles away in Ft. McIntosh , where he traded for necessities . This tract is on the branch of Brady Run between the Tuscarawas & Blackhawk roads. The Shaners farmed and refined salt at this location until Matthias death in 1807. He was 71 and been blind several years previous to his death. He mustered out in 1783. His wife was the daughter of Gen. George Jacob Poe .

Pennsylvania, USA What is known for certain is that he served in the Revolutionary War, lived in Westmoreland Co., PA, and later settled in Beaver Co., PA. He enlisted in December 1775 and served first as a private, then as a Sergeant in Captain James Sullivan's company, Colonels William Crawford's and Gibson's Virginia regiments; he was in the battles of Rictchley's Bridge, Brandywine, Germantown and several skirmishes and served to the close of the war and was discharged at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, by Colonel John Gibson

Buried in Old Stone, Methodist Cemetery, Beaver County, Pennsylvania.
Matthias married Sophronia Poe, daughter of George Jacob and Elizabeth Catherine Poe, in 1756 in Westmoreland Co., PA. They had at least seven children:
