Jacob Shaffer (Sr) arrived in the Port of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, accompanied by his wife Dorothea Broschen and a son named Jacob, on 24 September 1753 aboard the ship Neptune. Upon arriving in America, he, his wife, and son settled in Baltimore (now Carroll) County, Maryland.
On 25 May 1776, the Continental Congress resolved that four Companies of Germans be raised in Pennsylvania and four Companies in Maryland to compose the German Regiment. The German Regiment would be under the command of Colonel Nicholas Haussegger of Pennsylvania. Captain Henry Fister commanded a Company in the German Regiment. Captain Fister raised his Company in Baltimore (now Carroll) County, Maryland. Jacob Shaffer joined Captain Henry Fister’s Company as a Private when the German Regiment was formed.
Private Jacob Shaffer was with the German Regiment at Trenton in December of 1776; Assunpink Creek; Princeton; Brandywine in September 1777; Germantown in October 1777; Monmouth in June 1778.
After the War, Jacob returned to Baltimore (now Carroll) County, Maryland, where he was a farmer on a large farm near Westminster, Maryland. His son John Schaeffer married a neighbor girl named Mary Pouder. Mary’s father, Jacob Leonard Pouder served as an Ensign in the Lancaster County, Pennsylvania Militia during the American Revolution.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
