Author: Fred Carrington, Ph.D.
William Seward (1627-1689), called the Immigrant and was a tanner, was the progenitor of this Seward line. Born in Bristol, England, he died in Guilford, CT. In 1651, he married Grace Norton in Guilford, CT. Three generations were to follow, including his son Captain John Seward (1653-1748), his son Deacon William Seward (1684-1764), and his son David Seward (1714-1801). American Revolution Patriot David Seward, Jr. (1748-1813) lived, served, and died in Guilford, CT. He married Mabel Field in 1780.

Per DAR application materials, Corporal David Seward, Jr. served in Capt. Daniel Hand's Company, under Col. Talcott's Regiment. He was in Capt. Hand's payroll for services on the New York expedition and was discharged in April, 1776.

Additional paperwork reflects that Corporal Seward served in the 9th Regiment, Connecticut Militia. He was under Capt. Jonathan Pell's Company in Lt. Col. John Mead's Regiment of Militia under the command of Maj. Gen. Wooster, October, 1776. In this capacity he was discharged December, 1776. He is also shown as serving in Waterbury's Regiment, Connecticut of a Company commanded by Capt. Silvanus Brown who was engaged in an expedition to Queens County, on Long Island, uder the command of Col. David Waterbury, by order of the Continental Congress.

He had two brothers who also served in the Revolution. Timothy (1756-1849) served as a Private in Connecticut. Nathan (1758-1815) served as a Corporal in Connecticut.

From the totality of these records, American Revolution Patriot Corporal David Seward, Jr. and his two brothers, Timothy and Nathan, served their country with great distinction.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
