Author: David Merrill Leonard
William Settle, (b. ca. 1720 in Scotland) married Sarah Garner about 1745 in Fauquier County, VA. William acquired 507 acres in North Neck, VA from Lord Thomas Fairfax, Baron of Cameron in Scotland, on 13 July 1742. He later acquired 321 acres in Rappahannock County, VA.
William served as a Captain in the Fauquier County Militia and appears on militia lists between 27 June 1760 and 23 July 1761. William aided the patriot Cause of the American Revolution as recorded by the Fauquier County Court Minute Book 1775-1783 as follows: “the Court proceeded to receive claims against the Commonwealth for articles impressed for use of the public as follows to wit: A Certificate of William Settle for 375 lbs. of bacon, 30 bushels of wheat, 14 days waggonage (sic) and 7 days waggoning.” His residence was given as Hamilton Parish, Fauquier County dur the Revolution.
William died on 5 February 1782. His claim was posthumously considered by the Court one day following the probate of his will on 25 March 1782. His will names his wife Sarah to receive “all my estate, real and personal, during her natural life.” Sarah also died in 1782. Daughter Elizabeth recevied 100 acres of land, all household goods, and slaves. Son-in-law William Freeman recevied 100 acres, and Edward received 530 acres.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
