Author: John Mark DeNicola

Franz Sigerist, the second child of Hans Sigerist and Anna Wildberger, and is listed as one of a family of six who emigrated from Switzerland (parents, one older brother, and two younger sisters) in 1744. His birth year is listed as 1738. A note in the records about the father reads as follows: This man has had a respectable means but has been a poor manager and, as a result, could not for long have kept up. Therefore he was also ill-provided at his departure.

He married Veronica Kunigunda Feiser, who emigrated with her family from Germany in 1744, sometime before 1760, since their first child was baptized in December 1760. They had eleven children (six sons and five daughters) from 1760 to 1780. Franz's Last Will and Testament verifies that number since he lists all of the children.

In 1765 Franz applied for a warrant for 100 acres of land in York Township, York County, Pennsylvania, and had it surveyed on 14 November 1765.

By 1779 the tax records indicate that Francis had moved his family to Hopewell Township, where he lived for the remainder of his life. Below are the Supply Tax and Exoneration records for his property in Hopewell Township during the years 1779 - 1783:

Veronika passed away sometime before 1816 since there is a July 1816 record of Franz's marriage to Susan Catherine Lang at Trinity Reformed Church in York. This second marriage produced no children. According to his estate record, Francis passed away around June 1819 (his will is dated 12 June 1819). The will is recorded in York County, Pennsylvania, in Book O, Page 152. At this time, the graves of Francis and Veronica have not been located.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
