The following is a brief biography of Patriot Hugh Scott, Sr., Hugh Scott, Sr., was the 5th great grandfather of Compatriot Lance Gregory Rose, SAR #182858, PASSAR #12282, goprose2002@yahoo.com, of the General Anthony Wayne Chapter.

Major Hugh Scott, Sr , (SAR P-286020) and (DAR A101484) served in the American Revolution in Washington County, Pennsylvania. Hugh Scott, Sr. served as a Major in the 2nd Battalion of the Washington County Militia, Washington, Pennsylvania under the command of Lieutenant Colonel George Vallandigham. Major Hugh Scott, Sr., also served as a Purchasing Agent for Washington County, Pennsylvania.

Hugh Scott was ordained one of the five ruling elders in the Pigeon' Creek congregation of the
Presbyterian Church on the third Sabbath of November, 1776, the pastor being Rev. John McMillian, D. D.

His name is also found in the first grand jury panel of October 2, 1781. Hugh was also one of the four trustees who were directed to purchase the property for the construction of the Washington County Court House and Jail. The land was obtained from David Hoge on the 18th of October, 1781. Hugh would later be commissioned as a justice of the peace November 8, 1788.

Hugh Scott was born in 1726 in Chester County, Pennsylvania an6020d died 11 October 1819 in Washington County, Pennsylvania. Hugh was a son of Abraham and Jane Scott. He married Janet Agnew in 1754. Janet Agnew was the daughter of Captain James Agnew and Margret Ochiltree. Janet was a lineal descendent of the Agnews of Lochnaw, Scotland, Hereditary Sheriffs of Galloway, and as such a direct descendant of King Robert I, (“Robert the Bruce”) of Scotland, as established in Burke’s Peerage. Hugh and Janet Agnew Scott were the parents of nine children: Rebecca, Abraham, Hugh Jr., Margaret, James, Josiah, John, Elizabeth, and Sarah.

Hugh was a successful left-handed blacksmith. He established plantations or farms for each of his children. He would eventually serve as a Judge of the Common Pleas in Washington County, Pennsylvania. He was ordained Nov. 1776 as an Elder of the Pigeon Creek Presbyterian Church. He was one of the signers of the "Religious Agreement" written by James Edger.
