Benjamin Sammon was born on 8 February 1757 at Shawangunk, Ulster, New York, in the Mohawk Valley. He was baptized on 14 September of that year, the son of Dirk Frederick Sammons and Marretjen Tak. His father, Dirk Sammons, was killed by Indians sometime in 1760, and he, along with his mother and sister Cattelyntje, moved to the farm of his uncle, Samson Sammons. Benjamin married Annitje Mintline on 4 January 1778 at Caughnawaga (now Fonda), Montgomery, New York. They had eleven known children.
Benjamin’s military service record states, “While residing in said Shawangunk, Benjamin enlisted in 1775, served in that year and in 1776 and 1777, on short tours under Captain’s John Davis and Nicholas Marselius, Major Giles (Jellies) Fonda, Colonel’s Frederick Fisher, and Abraham Cuyler, in the New York troops. He enlisted in March or April of 1779, [and] served as a private in Captain Robert Hunter’s Company, Colonel Albert Pawling’s Regiment; length of Service, nine months: In 1780, he again served on short tours under Captain Marselius and Colonel Cuyler in the New York Troops and was in a small engagement at Colonel Klock’s, a place now called Oppenheim, in Montgomery County, New York. He stated that during five years of the Revolution, when not on regular tours, he acted as a guard for the Continental Store House at Albany, New York, which service amounted to at least one month in each year and that his entire service amounted to twenty months….”
After the Revolution, Benjamin and Annitje Sammons lived as farmers and reared their children in the Caugnawage (Fonda) and Johnstown areas, Montgomery County, New York.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
