Jacob Chelatre or Schlatre was born in 1752 to Jans Johann and Magdelena (Teahinmer) Chlatre in Germany.
He originally arrived in the Pennsylvania/Maryland area, and in 1773, he crossed the Allegheny Mountains with his brother, Martin, and his parents. They boarded a barge at Three Rivers, now Pittsburgh. Two other families accompanied them on their 981-mile trip down the Ohio River and then the 744-mile trip down the Mississippi River, ending at Iberville in Spanish Louisiana on 12 August 1773. His father died before 14 September 1776.
Jacob married Barbara Kleinpeter on 20 April 1776. In the 1777 District of Iberville Census, he is listed with his wife, Barbara, and widowed mother, 20 cows, 18 hogs, 30 fowl, and six arpents of land. In a biography by his grandson Michael, Jacob is noted as raising cotton and making a lot of money. He built Homestead Plantation, boarded by Bayou Jacob and six arpents fronting the Mississippi River. He lived a frugal lifestyle but left $4,990 pesos at his death. Their known children were:
Catalina was born on 16 November 1777 and married Louis Alexandre Reboul.
Joseph was baptized on 3 September 1779 and married (1) Elizabeth Sharp and (2) Catherine Cork.
Magdelena was born 17 April 1782 and married Pablo (Paul) Dupuy.
Marie Barbara was born on 14 August 1785 and married Francois Charles Marianaux.
Francois Santiago was born on 21 December 1787, unmarried, and buried on 26 September 1819.
Juan was born on 14 June 1791 and married Elizabeth Henriette Dardenne.
Michael Schlatre was born on 5 October 1793 and married Jeanne Dardenne.
Jacob assisted in establishing American independence while acting in the capacity of a Fusilier in the Iberville Militia, Commandant Louis Dutiene, under Spanish Governor Bernardo de Galvez. He participated in the capture of Fort Bute at Manchac and the fort at Baton Rouge.
The Patriot died on 28 February 1795 in Iberville District, Louisiana, and was buried at St. Gabriel Catholic Church Cemetery in St. Gabriel, Louisiana. His grave is now lost due to the encroachment of the Mississippi River.
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
