Author: George Edward Livingston

SAMUEL RUTAN: Born 4 Sept. 1754, Essex County New Jersey. Son of Abraham Rutan. In 1778, at the Presbyterian Church at “Turkey”, now New Providence, Essex County, NJ, he married Eleanor Bedell, born 1759, daughter of Jacob and Eleanor Powers Bedell. Samuel and Eleanor Rutan were the parents of 8 children, 3 sons and 5 daughters, plus a set of twins who died shortly after birth in 1787.
Samuel Rutan served as a Private from 1775 to 1779 in Captain Potter’s Company of the New Jersey Militia, Col. Elias Dayton’s Regiment. He enlisted 14 Feb 1775 at Morristown NJ. He was at the battles of Monmouth, Springfield and Connecticut farms. Samuel died 4 Jan. 1840 at age 85. Eleanor died two years later in 1842. Both are buried at Upper Ten-mile Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Prosperity, Morris Twp., Washington County PA.
