Author: George Rushton Guthrie
Andrew Rudy
Private Pennsylvania Troop of Militia
7th of the 10th
Andrew was born on a farm near Lancaster Town in Lancaster County Pennsylvania in 1757 to Emich and Catharine Beerin Rudy. His father Emich was the son of Hans Ernst Rudy of Lancaster. All were farmers, cattleman and land owner in Lancaster County Pennsylvania. Andrew was the perfect age to fight in the Revolution. He enlisted in the Pennsylvania Militia and fought in the Battle of Brandy Wine Creek which turned out to be one of the biggest defeats General George Washington experienced during the entire war.
I am trying to research more information on Andrews unit the 7th Company commanded by Capt. Emanuel Carpenter and the 10th Battalion commanded by Colonel David Jenlaus. The battle of Brandy Wine Creek began on Sept. 9, 1777 with the landing of over 19,500 British Troops from Naval vessels that had transported them from New York to as close to Philadelphia which was the Capital of the Continental Government as their ships could go.
Washington prepared for a major battle and felt he had all of the ford or places the British General Howe’s forces could cross covered. General Howe with the help of a number of Tories or Crown Loyalists found several fords that were unguarded. Howe split his army and out flanked General Washington and on September 11, 1777 attacked in what would become one of the longest and bloodiest battles of the Revolutionary War. For 11 hours the two army’s fought and General Green was the savior of the day attacking and relocating with his army several different directions to shore up the front lines so the main body of Washington’s Army could retreat and live to fight another day.
General Green estimated the Continental Army lost over 1,200 men. The British recorded show they lost 93 killed, 488 wounded and 6 MIA . The British captured 11 of the 14 Cannons of the Continental’s because the draft horses that pulled the guns had been killed.
One of the officers wounded at Brandy Wine Creek was the Marquis de Lafayette who would later become one of the hero’s of the Revolution with many cities named after him.
Brandy Wine was a major defeat for General Washington. He was out flanked, out maneuvered and showed that the British General Howe had better ground intelligence people working for him. The result of the loss at Brandy Wine Creek was that Philadelphia fell to the British on the 26th of September 1777 as General Howe’s Army march in unopposed.
The young Government fled to Lancaster and set up a capital and then finally to Reading Pennsylvania as the British forces attempted to destroy this rebellious upstart of a Nation.
I am trying to research Andrew Rudy more in depth. He shows up in records as a First Lieutenant in the Pennsylvania Militia in 1783. But so far I have not been able to fill in the service between 1777 and 1783. After the war Andrew married Catherine Baer on July 3, 1785 and had four children. Isaac 1787,Jacob, Abraham, Frederic . Andrew and his son Isaac are my direct linage. The rest of the family history read like the migration west as land in the east became relatively expensive the decedents moved west to western Pennsylvania, Ohio and finally Territorial Kansas before it became a State.
This is all I have so far and any suggestions on how to research military records please let me know.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
