Author: Dan Gwin
Philip RAUSCH was born 18 March 1741 the son of Johannes Adam RAUSCH and Susannah SEHLER. Philip died 1 March 1820 in Cheshire Township, Gallia County, Ohio, and was buried at Roush Cemetery in Cheshire Township. He married Catherine KELCHNER circa 1765.

During the Revolutionary War, Philip served in the Dunmore County Militia in Captain Jacob Holeman’s Company. (The Philip Roush of this biographical sketch did not serve in the Northampton Pennsylvania Militia. See below.) “A List of the Men’s Names in Dunmore County Militia Under the Command of Capt. Jacob Holeman” includes the names of Henry, Jacob, John Jr., and Philip Rouse (i.e. Roush). The militia unit of which Philip Roush was a member was called out to repel the British forces in Virginia in 1780-81. Captain Holeman had been given command of a militia company as early as May 1775.

By virtue of the power and authority to me given as Lieutenant of the County of Dunmore, I do hereby enlist the within named men under the Command of Capt. Jacob Holeman. Given under my hand this 29th day of May 1775. Isaac Zane.

Jane Roush McCafferty, C.G. (Certified Genealogist), contributed the following note concerning Philip Roush’s military service for publication in Revolutionary War Soldiers Who Lived in Gallia County, Ohio.

His name, along with his brothers Henry, Jacob, and John, Jr., was found on one of five Militia Muster Rolls of Jacob Holman’s Company which was made up of Mill Creek settlers in Shenandoah County, Virginia.
... Note the information on his tombstone for Revolutionary Service and that listed in the Roster of Revolutionary Soldiers in Ohio is not correct. A Philip Rouch did serve from Pennsylvania but this cannot be the same Philip. There is proof that he and his family were in Shenandoah County by 1765. All of his children were born there and are listed on the church records. Why would he go back to Pennsylvania and serve in 1780 when he already had served with the Virginia Militia and was an older man to begin with? They are two different men.

Lester L. Roush (a great-great-grandson of Philip’s brother, George Roush) provides further evidence to support Philip’s service in Virginia in one of his publications for the Roush Family Association.

The Reverend Tyman Williams of Shenandoah County, Virginia, made an important discovery for the Roush Family.... “When my old home ‘Birdswood,’ near Woodstock, Shenandoah County, Virginia, was broken up, I found in the attic some papers of my great-great-grandfather, Col. Abraham Bird, also original Member of the [Shenandoah] County Committee of Safety, having to do with the transactions of the Committee, and including first complete list of its members in the minutes of the first meeting. On one of the five militia Muster Rolls that of Jacob Holman’s Company (the Mill Creek settlers of the county) are the names of Henry, Phillip, Jacob and John Roush Jr.”

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
