Hans Casper Rinker was born 1727 in Switzerland to Jakob Ringger and Barbara Morff.  On 5 May 1743, Casper sailed from Rotterdam on the ship "Francis & Elizabeth".  He came to America with his step-Mother and brothers.  He spent the first few years in Germantown, Pennsylvania and eventually settled in Winchester, Frederick, VA.  In 1762, his half brother deeded him Lot #104 in Winchester.  After getting settled in Winchester, he began seeking his dreams of making a fortune in America.  On 2 Jun 1762 he purchased 800 acres along Dillon's run in Hampshire County, that had been surveyed by George Washington.  On subsequent years he purchased many different tracts of land, totaling more than 2000 acres in Frederick County along Isaac's Creek and Back Creek.  It is evident that Casper was acquainted with George Washington while he was surveying in the Northern Neck for Lord Fairfax.  In 1770, George Washington and private party made a trip to the Great Kanawha and stopped twice at Casper Rinker's, once to dine there on 7 Oct 1770 and again on the return trip, by way of Fort Cumberland.  Accompanying Washington were his personal physician, Dr. James Crarik and two servants, who took care of the horses and arranged for supplies.  Detailed information in regards to this has been taken from notes in Washington's journal and testimony from Casper's wife.  As some point prior to 1775, Casper had joined the Virginia Militia and had risen to the rank of Lieutenant as an officer in the Revolutionary War.  Frederick County Court records show that Casper was recommended to the Governor of Virginia to replace Robert White as Company Commander on 1 Apr 1777 and was promoted to Captain as a result.  Casper and Maria Schultz were married 11 Apr 1757 in Germantown, PA and had 7 children.  These were Elizabeth (1758-1758); Mary Magdalena (1759-?); Elizabeth (1761-1848); Jacob (1764-?); Catherine (1765-abt 1809); Margareta Barbara (1772-?) & Mary (abt 1774-?).  Both Casper and Maria are buried at the Back Creek Quaker Cemetery.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
