Author: Allan Ray Wenzel Ph.D.

Moses Preston was born in 1762, in Bedford County, Virginia, a son of Philip Preston and Betty Richardson.

Moses enlisted when 17 years of age, in 1779, in Halifax County, Virginia, for 18 months of service, in Major Hill’s Company, Colonel Abraham Buford’s Bedford County Infantry Regiment. He marched to the Carolinas, where he remained for nine months, at his base camp in Hillsborough, North Carolina. In the spring of 1780, Moses enlisted in Captain Boyer/Bowyer’s (later Captain Newell’s) Company, Colonel Campbell’s Bedford County Infantry Regiment, which was re-designated the 7th Virginia Regiment, under the command of General Horatio Gates.

Moses took part in the battles and skirmishes of Camden (South Carolina on 16 August 1780), Clapp’s Mills (Alamance County, North Carolina on 2 March 1781), Sawyers Mill (?) (North Carolina), Guilford Courthouse (Guilford County, North Carolina on 15 March 1781), and the Siege of Ninety-Six (Greenwood County, South Carolina on 22 May-9 June 1781).

Moses returned home to Bedford County, Virginia, for a short period. During which he married on 9 July 1783 to Fanny Arthur and then returned to South Carolina, where he was discharged in November 1783.

In 1802 he moved his family into Floyd County (an area that later became Lawrence County), Kentucky, where he remained until his death on 18 April 1842. He is buried in the Moses Preston Family Cemetery, located near Ulysses, Lawrence County, Kentucky. He has a United States Military headstone.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
