Author: Dr. Michael Bernard Gunn
Born on July 10, 1754 Pennsylvania to Parents: Jonas and Mary (Heckathorn) Potts.  He served as a soldier with Virginia Continental Army under Captain William Smith’s Company, under Colonel Daniel Morgan’s 11th VA Regiment. He married Elizabeth English (_-1814) in 1788; children: Joshua, Thomas, David, John, Nathan, Anna, Samuel, Mary Lidia William and Sarah. He lived in Loudoun County, VA during the War, then moved to western PA and on to Ohio.  Jonathan Potts was a large powerful man and even in his last years delighted in feats of strength, when the farmers gathered in the town of Fairview. When his body was being prepared for burial it is said to have been covered with sabre wound scars from his gallant career in the Revolutionary War. He was pensioned Ref S40288 having applied on April 28, 1818 in Jefferson County and given a land granton August 30, 1784 for 100 acres He Died on July 4, 1831 and He was buried in old Fairfield Cemetery near East Springfield, Jefferson Co., OH. but body was removed due to the neglect of the graveyard and placed in Union Cemetery, 1720 Sunset Blvd, Steubenville, Jefferson Co., OH 43952 on plot dedicated to the soldiers of the Civil War. Permission was granted by the Sons of Veterans for placing the body in this plot. The removing and placing the body was done under the supervision and at the expense of Steubenville Chap of D. A. R.  Jonathan Potts family history in a book (“The Simpson Family & Its Branches”) presented to Mrs Sinclair by the Author was placed into the Carnegie Library, on the DAR shelf.
