Johan Martin Potteiger was the son of Johann Martin & Anna Barbara (Suess) Pfateicher. He was born September 24, 1725 in Spoeck, Kreis Karlsruhe, Baden Durlach, Germany. Johan Martin along with his parents and younger brother Johan Adam arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on October 5, 1737 aboard the ship Townshend. The family settled in Heidelberg Twp., Lancaster County (now Berks County), PA.
Johan Martin married Maria Elisabeth ***** (1727-1778). They were the parents of six children: Maria Elisabeth, Maria Eva, Maria Catharina, Maria Eva Rosina, Martin Jr. and Susanna Catharina. Martin was a farmer his entire life, residing and dying in Heidelberg Twp., Berks County, PA probably at his planation.
He died November 20, 1791 and is buried at the St. Daniel’s Church (Corner Church / Eck Church) Cemetery, Heidelberg Twp., Berks County, PA. His wife is buried there also.
During the Revolutionary War he was a private in the 8th Company, Berks County, Pennsylvania Militia. He took the Oath of Allegiance in Berks County, PA on May 29,1778 and paid the Supply Tax in Heidelberg Twp., Berks County, PA in 1779, 1780 and 1781.
