Author: Herbert M. Gould
Elkanah Porter was born July 26, 1737 in New London, Connecticut, son of John Porter and Abigail Knapp. On May 27, 1762 he married Hepzibah Allen, who is a descendant of Francis Cooke, of the Mayflower. They had eight children, including sons John, Joshua, Asa, Simeon and Stephen, and daughters, Lovina, Louisa and Sarah. After 1778, in Bolton, Connecticut, he married Anna Talcott. They had three children: Jesse, Amos and Anna. During the Revolutionary War he was Private, serving under Capt. John Skinner and Col. Jonathan Latimer.

Elkanah Porter died December 3, 1816 in Windham County, Connecticut.
