Author: Raymond Waldo Page
Gershom Page, the son of Seth Pope and Jerusha Tobey, was born 22 Aug 1743 in Sandwich, Barnstable Co, Massachusetts, and died 22 Mar 1810 in Burlington, New York. He married Hannah Smith about 1 Mar 1762. Hannah was born 26 MAR 1742 and died 9 FEB 1830. On 1 MAR 1762 he was given by his father half of the family's homestead near the eastern edge of Plainfield, Connecticut. In 1779 he sold this farm and moved his family to Bennington, Vermont. Before 1790 he as well as seven of his sons and two of his sons-in-law moved to the Burlington area (they all appear there in the 1790 Federal census). In 1792 he purchased from Judge Cooper 240 acres at the far northern part of the township of Burlington,New York, paying 12 shillings an acre in the deal. At the first town meeting of Burlington (2 APR 1793) he was elected Commissioner of Highways.

He served as a Private in Captain Samuel Hall's company of Light horse, 4th Connecticut Regiment, commanded by Major Ebenezer Backus, 1776. The Unit marched 7 SEP 1776 to New York; relieved 1 NOV 1776. He is reported to have served in the northern army under Generals Arnold and Gates; family tradition says that he rose to the rank of Captain. Of his record in the war years, he is clearly listed in the undated pay roll of the company, where it is recorded they marched 1 SEP 1776 and were discharged 2 NOV 1776, with service of 60 days.

Gershom and Hannah had the following children, of whom it is believed that the first nine were probably born in Plainfield, Connecticut and the rest in Bennington, Vermont:

i. Phebe POPE b. 22 OCT 1762, d. 19 JUL 1843
ii. Jedediah POPE b. 15 SEP 1764, d. 7 APR 1850
iii. Deborah POPE b. 22 Oct 1766, d. 16 JAN 1846
iv. John POPE b. 15 Dec 1768, d. 26 JUL 1865
v. Timothy POPE b. 16 Jan 1770, d. 9 NOV 1835
vi. Squire Smith POPE b. 16 Jun 1773, d. 20 SEP 1839
vii. Seth POPE b. 6 Dec 1775, d. 3 JAN 1857
viii. Gates POPE b. 5 Mar 1778, d. 21 JUL 1840
ix. Arnold POPE b. 5 Mar 1778, d. 21 DEC 1858
x. Hannah POPE b. 19 May 1780, d. 22 AUG 1858
xi. Elizabeth POPE b. 12 Sep 1782, d. 4 FEB 1866
xii. Jerusha POPE b. 6 Jan 1787, d. 9 MAR 1788

It is recorded of him:"It is traditional that he was a man of fine personal appearance, strong and positive character, unblemished integrity. He was a consistent Christian, he was liberal in supporting the institutions of religion, generous to less successful neighbors, an arbitrator and peacemaker always, traits which we know to have been abundantly reproduced in his posterity to this day."

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
