The Lutheran Church burial register lists: “June 30, 1856, John Statler, 98 years, [cause of death] old age, [scripture reading] Heb. 9:27.” His headstone states that he died “in the 97th year of his age, while the Loudoun County Death Register lists his age at death as 96 years, five months, and 11 days, and the cause of death as “old age.” John is buried in lot KK22 in New Jerusalem Lutheran Cemetery, and his wife Priscilla, who died on 28 February 1852 at 85 years of age, is buried next to him, in site KK21.

A news article published on 7 July 1856 in the Alexandria (Virginia) Gazette and other newspapers stated

Another Revolutionary Soldier Gone.–Died at his late residence in Loudoun county, Va., on the 30th of June, John Statler, in the ninety-seventh year of his age.  Mr. Statler served three tours of duty during the Revolutionary war, and was, perhaps, at the time of his decease, the only survivor in this county of the noble band who served their country in `the time that tried men’s souls.

In his intercourse with his neighbors, his conduct was characterized by the most scrupulous integrity, and the memory of his virtues will long live in their remembrance.”

Another news article published in the Alexandria Gazette on 22 August 1856 stated that, according to the Loudoun Mirror, a farm belonging to the heirs of John Statler, deceased, containing 180 acres, was sold on Saturday 12th last, for $62.22 per acre, to William Wenner of Loudoun County.

To date, no record has been located of any military service by John Statler. Perhaps further investigation in Pennsylvania and Maryland records will yield some information.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
