Qualifying Service Description:
  1. While living in Virginia, he was captured by the British/Tories and taken to South Carolina.
  2. He escaped and enlisted in 1780 as a Private in Captain Anderson Thomas' Company of Horse for a time under Colonel Washington.
  3. After several months he returned to Grayson County, Virginia, and served as a private under Captain James Cox and Lieutenant David Cox.

Benjamin Phipps was born Abt. 1761 in Orange Co., VA.

He married Jane Hash (b. 1766, Grayson Co., VA - d. Aft. 1862, Grayson Co., VA) on 5 Jul 1782 in Grayson Co., VA. They had: Cornelia Phipps (b. 5 Dec 1806, Grayson Co., VA - d. 1904, Grayson Co., VA) m. Thomas Hash.

He died 3 May 1838 in Grayson Co., VA.

His patriotic service included service as a Private in Capt. Enoch Osborne's Company of Militia, Grayson Co., VA in 1781; Signer of the Oath of Allegiance to the State of Virginia in 1777.

He is buried at Benjamin Phipps Cemetery, Saddle Creek, Grayson Co., VA.
