Joseph Phillis, Sr. paid the Supply Tax in 1781 in Smith Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania. Joseph Phillis, Sr. has been recognized by the Sons of the American Revolution as a Revolutionary Patriot. His life spanned three centuries, born in 1694 lived throughout all of the 1700’s and died in November 1801. Joseph Phillis, Sr., lived to the age of 107 and is buried near his daughter, Rachel Phillis Moore and his son-in law, Captain Thomas Moore, in the Old Mill Creek Presbyterian Cemetery, Hookstown, Beaver County, Pennsylvania.
Joseph Phillis, Sr., was born in 1694 in Fordwich, England. Joseph received an education and is reported to have been fluent in French. Joseph served in the British Navy aboard a Man of War. After he left the British Navy he settled in American Colonies near Leesburg, Loudoun Co., Virginia.
In 1774 Joseph moved to Western Pennsylvania and would purchase land near present day Burgettstown, Washington County, Pennsylvania. In 1781 Joseph Phillis, Sr., would pay the Supply Tax in Smith Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania. After the death of his wife, Nancy Phillis in 1790, Joseph would relocate and live with his daughter and son in law, Rachel Phillis Moore and Thomas Moore.
Joseph Phillis, Sr., would die in November of 1801 at the age of 107 while residing with his son in law, Thomas Moore and daughter Rachel (Phillis) Moore. Family records report that Joseph was buried at Mill Creek Church Cemetery, next to Thomas & Rachel (Phillis) Moore. Only Captain Thomas Moore has a grave marker.
