William Petty was born in 1764 at Surry County, North Carolina. At the age of 16 years, he volunteered as a substitute into a North Carolina Militia unit under the command of General Rutherford, Colonel Armstrong and Captain Absalom Bostick. He later was drafted and served as a private under Major Elisha Isaacs at the Battle at Camden and with scouting parties. After the close of the last campaign, he was engaged in guarding the legislature of North Carolina. He was awarded a pension for his service.
He married Lucretia Wright of Surry County, 25 January 1784. They were the parents of twelve children: Nancy, Cole, Lazarus, John Wright, Zachariah, Amelia, William, James Williams, Thomas, Benjamin, Liza, and Daniel Harrison.
They moved to Wilkes County, North Carolina. In 1817, they moved to Madison County, Alabama Territory. In 1832, he purchased 80 acres for two dollars per acre, and later bought several other parcels of land for his successful farming activity. The family of Lucretia Wright Petty also purchased land in the same area.
William Petty wrote his will 26 April 1832. He died 26 September 1834. He and his wife were buried at a small area consisting only of their two graves on Macon Road, Madison County, Alabama. Both graves have legible stones. The Hunt Springs Chapter NSDAR marked William Petty’s grave.
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
