Author: David Adriance Foster
Benjamin Pettingell (Pettengell) was born in Abington, MA in 1719, son of Daniel Pettingell, a cooper, and Esther French. Benjamin’s first wife, Mary Kingman, died in 1751. He and Judith Caswell (Castle) were married in 1753. He had nine children from the two marriages. His occupation was probably farmer since he was described as a large landowner.

In the French and Indian War, according to John Pettengell’s Pettengel Genealogy he served as Clerk in Colonel Ephraim Leonard's Regiment in the Fort William Henry Expedition in 1757. After a march of 40 miles, they learned the French had already captured the Fort. The Society of Colonial Wars recognizes his service.

Pettengell lived in Easton, MA at the time of the Revolution and his Patriot service was both civilian and military. He was a Private in Captain Keith’s Company of Colonel John Daggett’s 4th Bristol County Regiment of the Massachusetts Militia. He was also in Captain Hodges Company of the same Regiment. They left Easton on 28 December 1776 to oppose the British who had captured Newport, RI.

He served on the Easton Committee on Correspondence and Safety in 1775 and was a Representative in the Massachusetts Provincial Congress, known as the General Court, in 1775 and 1776.

He moved to Maine in 1779, where he died in Hallowell 1795.
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
