Author: David A. Peters
George Michael Peters was born on 14 March 1750 (and baptized on 14 March 1752) in York County, Pennsylvania, the son of Johann George Michael and Anna Margareta (Schedle) Peters. The father, Johann George, emigrated from the German Palatinate, probably Baden-Württemberg, in the 1740s; they married in 1749 in Pennsylvania and settled in York County, Pennsylvania. His mother is believed to have been born in Northampton County.
George Michael enlisted in Captain Michael Doudel’s York County Company of Colonel William Thompson’s 1st Pennsylvania Rifle Battalion on 4 July 1775 for a one-year enlistment; he presumably marched to the Siege of Boston with the battalion. At Boston, 1st Lieutenant Henry Miller was promoted to Captain and succeeded Michael Doudel as the company commander, and Lieutenant Colonel Edward Hand succeeded William Thompson as regimental commander.
Thompson’s Battalion was designated the 1st Continental Regiment in January of 1776. After Boston, the regiment marched with the main body of the Continental Army to New York and encamped at Long Island (Brooklyn) at the town of New Utrecht, George Michael was discharged on 4 July 1776 from Brooklyn, not quite two months prior to the Battle of Long Island, his discharge papers in his pension file are signed by Colonel Hand prove his service, place and date of discharge in the 1st Continental Regiment.
He returned to York County and enlisted in Colonel David Jamison’s 3rd Militia Battalion, Captain Gottfried Frey’s Company. In the second organization of the Pennsylvania Militia of 1780, he served in Lieutenant Colonel Francis Remer’s 5th Battalion, Captains Michael Lechner and Jacob Comfort’s Companies. His younger brother John Peter Peters (1760-1825) also served in the York County Militia and guarded British and Hessian Convention (from Saratoga) prisoners of war at Camp Security in York County in 1783, Lieutenant Charles Bernetz’s detail.
In 1776, he married Catherine Elizabeth Moser [Mosser or Musser] in York County. She was the daughter of Samuel and Catherine (Francois) Moser. George Michael and Catherine Elizabeth had several known children:
Catharina Elisabet “Elizabeth” was born on 29 June 1778 and married Jacob Leaks.
Johann Henrich “John Henry” was born on 13 February 1780 and married Elizabeth Miller.
Johannes “John” was born on 18 February 1782.
Michael was born on 31 January 1784 and married Catharine Moser.
George Michael was born on 8 October 1785 and married Salome “Sally” Flieger.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
