Thomas Patterson was born on 1 February 1754 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the son of James Patterson and Mary Montgomery.

He married Mary Tanneyhill about 1777 and their known children were:

  • Rebecca was born on 13 August 1778.
  • Elizabeth was born on 18 March 1780.
  • Samuel was born on 3 March 1782.
  • Nathan was born on 20 February 1784 and died in 1792.
  • Mary was born on 3 March 1786.
  • Margaret was born on 10 June 1788.
  • Thomas was born on 13 February 1790.
  • James was born on 11 January 1792.
  • Jane was born on 10 May 1796.

During the American Revolution, he enlisted as a private in the Company of Thomas Whiteside of the Third Battalion of Lancaster County, commanded by Colonel Thomas Porter. The Company was mustered on 13 August 1776. In the minutes of the Council of Safety, dated 29 August 1776, the Commissary was ordered to deliver to Major Ewing was for one hundred stands of arms for the use of Colonel Porter’s Battalion. It was reported that they had to march to camps at “the Jerseys.” His length of service is not known.

In 1779, at Little Britain Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, Thomas paid a Supply Tax on his property of two hundred and twelve acres, three horses, and four cows.

Thomas died on 28 March 1829 in Pennsylvania and was buried at Pigeon Creek Cemetery in Washington, Washington County, Pennsylvania.
