Author: Aimee Freeman

Michael O'Hair was born on 11 September 1749 in Newry Valley, County Down, Ireland. He arrived in colonial America at the age of 12 without his parents. He was bonded to Alexander Milroy in Staunton, Virginia, in 1760, moving close to the Cowpasture River before moving to Fincastle, Virginia.

He spent most of his time in this area until participating in the Virginia militia in 1776 before enlisting in the Continental Army, where he was selected to join Daniel Morgan's elite rifle company. With Morgan, he saw action in Saratoga and marched back to Valley Forge, where he was furloughed. He re-enlisted in the Illinois Regiment under George Rogers Clark, serving from 1 December 1779, and discharged on 2 February 1782.

During this time, he met the brother of his second wife, Eleanor Hawkins. They were married on 10 June 1783 in Botetourt, Virginia. In 1788, Michael, Eleanor, and two small children moved from Virginia to Kentucky following the Wilderness Road crossing in northern Tennessee, arriving at the Cumberland Gap. They continued following the Boone Trace, settling roughly ten miles south of Lexington.

Following Eleanor's death, he married Elizabeth Tribett on 4 April 1793, as recorded in Cark County, Kentucky. He was a pioneer of Kentucky, a soldier, a farmer, and a family man. He was married three times and had 19 children, 18 living to maturity.

The Patriot died in 1813 in Montgomery County, Kentucky. In his honor, a historical marker and a V/A stone were placed in Hazel Green Cemetery.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
