Jacob Kumler was born on 1 July 1742 in Switzerland.
There are unsourced references that he served as a Private in Captain Isaac Adam's Company of Militia from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. However, the author of this biography searched published rolls of Captain Adam’s Companies and has found no listing for a name similar to Jacob Kumler. There is no contemporary evidence to support Jacob serving in this company, and the service is no longer recognized by the DAR.
His name does appear in the records of Captain Krick’s Company of Berks County, Pennsylvania, as being part of his Company (State of the accounts of the county Lieutenants during the War of the Revolution, 1777-1789). Berks and Lancaster were neighboring counties.
Jacob’s name appears on a list of men who took Oath or Affirmation of Allegiance and Fidelity on 3 November 1778, as directed by an act of the General Assembly of Pennsylvania.
He was first married to Elizabeth Jung/Young on 24 April 1770 in Pennsylvania. They had the following known children:
Johann Jacob “John” was born on 19 March 1773 and married Elizabeth Kegereitz.
Henry was born on 3 January 1775 and married Susannah Wengert.
Elizabeth was born on 21 November 1779 and married Henry Hibschman.
After Elizabeth’s death, he married Sophia Breittenstein in about 1784. They had the following known children:
Catherine was born on 26 December 1784 and married Jacob Zinn.
He made his Last Will and Testament in Berks County, written in German. If a future genealogist is intrepid enough to translate it, they will be rewarded with the names of additional children, including a son named Michael.
The Patriot died on 22 October 1815 in Brecknock Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. It is thought that he is buried at Allegheny Union Cemetery Old in Mohnton, Berks County.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
