His godfather was Hans Michael Kunkel. According to The Kamp Papers II, page 543, John Michael came to Pennsylvania from Germany in 1754 at the age of 18. Pennsylvania German Pioneers states that "The Foreigners whose Names are underwritten, Imported in the Ship Barclay, Capt John Brown, from Rotterdam, but last from Cowes, did this day take the usual Oath and Declarations to the Government." Listed thereunder was Johanes (X) Kleinfeld, the (X) indicating his inability to write his name. The entry indicated that 250 "foreigners" entered at the courthouse at Philadelphia on Saturday September 14, 1754, from Alsace & Lorrain. Contrary to this, the research of Lloyd Faller has determined that Johannes Michael arrived with his parents on the ship Duke of Bedford, at Philadelphia on September 14, 1751.
He lived his entire life in Hopewell and Shrewsbury Townships of York County, PA. He was the father of 18 children. He died intestate and there was a suit concerning his estate, providing the records for the family history. The Orphans Court Administrative Petition of August 9, 1809, states that he died about two years ago (1807) leaving a widow Elizabeth and 17 children, whose names were listed (Docket #399). The same docket shows that he owned 219 acres in Shrewsbury Township and 170 acres in Hopewell Township. Prowell's History of York County, Pennsylvania indicates that an assessment was made in 1783 to cover the expenses of the Revolution. Michael's property consisted of one oil mill, one distillery and 380 acres of land. He was assessed 400 pounds sterling.
The 1790 census shows "Michal "KLEENFELLER" living in Shrewsbury Township of York County. With the family is one son over the age of 16 and six sons under the age of 16. Orphans Court Docket papers of November 1832 list the children that were both deceased and alive. That same year, papers filed in the estate of Daniel Klinefelter list his brothers and sisters.
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
