Author: David James Harrity

Cyprian Keyes, III, was born on 31 January 1759 at Shrewsbury, Providence of Massachusetts Bay Colony, British America. He was the second child of, Jr. (1734-1802) and Martha (Bush) Keyes. His paternal line descends from pilgrim Robert Keyes (1606-1647), who emigrated to America via the Winthrop Fleet no later than 1633.

At age 18, on 20 May 1777, Cyprian III signed a three-year enlistment with the 15th Massachusetts Regiment of the Massachusetts Continental Line, serving as a Private in the company designated at various times as Captain William Gates' or Captain John Pierce's Company.

In August 1777, Keyes was one of 5,000 Continental Troops that camped at Van Schaick Island (Cohoes, New York) under General Philip Schuyler. Next, the 15th Massachusetts marched north and saw action at the Battles of Saratoga (19 September - 7 October 1777). The battle acted as a decisive victory for American forces and catalyzed France to join forces in an alliance and enter the war.

In the winter of 1777-1778, the 15th Regiment under the command of the 2nd Massachusetts Brigade (Brigadier General John Glover), 4th Division (Major General Johann de Kalb), joined other Northern Department forces to form under the Main Department, commanded by General George Washington in defense of Philadelphia. He spent the winter encampment at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, and sadly, Cyprian contracted smallpox, likely from the mass inoculation efforts of that time. He lay sick in the field hospital for several weeks before dying there on 18 January 1778, just short of his 19th birthday.

Death from smallpox occurred three years earlier to his older brother David (1757-1775), by some accounts, possibly as a Patriot. Israel (1760-1841) was one of his younger brothers who fought and was wounded in the American Revolution as a Patriot (P-259588).

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
