Author: James Edward Kapp
George Michael Kapp, the third and last child of George Frederick and Eva Maria (Graff) Kapp, was born about 24 November 1745 on the Kapp farm in Heidelberg Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Records at the Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Stouchsburg indicate that he was born Thursday, five weeks before Christmas 1745 and baptized Christmas 1745 “in Graff’s house.” He died 17 Sep 1804 at Hagerstown, Maryland and is buried at St. John Lutheran Church Cemetery at Hagerstown. His obituary published in the 19 Sep 1804 edition of the Hagerstown “Torch Light and Public Advertiser” indicated that he was an inn-keeper in Hagerstown for many years.

Michael Kapp’s father, George Frederick Kapp was born 5 Jan 1809 in Bottenweiler, Germany and baptized 6 Jan 1809 according to family records found in the Wildenholz Church Book for the village of Botteweiler. He was a son of Johann Georg Kapp and his wife, Maria Catharina. George Frederick Kapp arrived at Philadelphia on the ship Pennsylvania Merchant on 11 Sep 1732. He made his way to the Tulpehocken region of Lancaster County shortly after his arrival at Philadelphia. On 8 Jun 1737, George Frederick Kapp was issued a warrant (number 52) in Heidelberg Township, Lancaster County for 200 acres of land. This land was surveyed (survey number A-70-175) on 4 Jul 1737 and contained 215 acres and states that Frederick has since assigned 107 of the 215 acres to his brother Andreas Capp. Heidelberg Township at that time was part of Lancaster County; but it became part of Berks County when that country was formed in 1752.

George Michael Kapp received a one-third share of his father’s plantation when his father died on 2 Apr 1749. Michael subsequently sold his share of land to his two brothers, Frederick and George, on 5 Dec 1771 as indicated in Berks County Deed Book Volume 22, Page 398. It is believed that this is about the time that Michael Kapp moved to Maryland.

Michael Kapp married Maria Catharine Neff, a daughter of Abraham and Christina (Lesch) Neff about 1770. They were the parents of four children.

Michael Kapp served with a militia unit from Washington County, Maryland during the Revolutionary War. Page 239 of the book “The Maryland Militia in the Revolutionary War” specifies that Michael (Cap) Kapp was on the Muster Roll of Captain Jeremiah Spires’s Company, Second Battalion, 4th Class, Washington County Militia. This book further states that Washington County militia units were ordered to duty in 1778-1780 to guard prisoners of war at Fort Frederick, which was located west of Hagerstown. It is possible that Michael Kapp’s militia unit was one of the units ordered to guard the prisoners.
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
