Directions to Cemetery / Gravesite:
  • From the intersection of 5th Street (Bus 15) and College Avenue in Hartsville, SC, take 5th St north for 850 feet (1.5 blocks) to the church on the right. The last set of church buildings has guest parking available that is near the cemetery and just off the road
  • From the parking lot near the road, turn right / perpendicular to the road and go past the second building on the left. Bear left towards the large tree in the cemetery. There is a long row of crypts just past the tree. John Norwood’s marker is at the near end of that row of crypts in the next plot. His marker is a light-colored stone with a rounded top

John Norwood, from Darlington, South Carolina, born March 17, 1751, and died on June 20th, 1826. John was married to Mary Martha Warren.

John entered service with the rank of private, under the command of Captain Elias Dubose, in the Volunteer Independent Company of St. David's Parish (Cheraws District) in 1775.

John Norwood later rose to the rank of captain and is recorded as served in General Marion’s Brigade, as well as under Major General Nathanael Greene during the Battle of Eutaw Springs.

Captain John Norwood's marker is located in the Joseph Norwood Plot in the First Baptist Church Cemetery in Hartsville, SC, Darlington County.
