Wilson Cary Nicholas was born January 31, 1761, at Williamsburg, Virginia, a son of Robert Nicholas and Anne. He married Margaret "Peggy" Smith, January 29, 1785, at Baltimore, Maryland. They had ten children over a period of 20 years.
He was a Lieutenant in the Albemarle County, Virginia, Militia.
He was admitted to the Virginia Bar in 1778.
He was member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 1784-1785, 1788-1789 and 1794-1799. He was nominated to fill a vacant seat served as one of the U.S. Senators from Virginia from 1799 to 1804. He was elected to the House of Representatives and served from 1807-1809. He was the Governor of Virginia from 1814-1816.
He died October 11, 1820, at Monticello near Charlottesville, Albemarle County, Virginia.

US Congressman, US Senator, Virginia Governor. Served in the Revolutionary War and commanded George Washington's Life Guard. He was elected as a Senator from Virginia to the United States Senate, serving from 1799 to 1804. He was then elected to represent Virginia in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1807 to 1809. Served as Governor of Virginia from 1814 to 1816
