Author: Dr. Barry Paul Lewis Jr

Stephen Morse was born in 1751. He lived in Newbury, Massachusetts.

Stephen was a private in Captain Moses Nowell’s Company, which marched on the alarm of 19 April 1775. He served for four days.

Stephen enlisted as a corporal in Captain William Rogers’s 8th Company in Colonel Gerrish’s (later Lieutenant Colonel Loammi Baldwin’s) 38th Regiment. He served on the main guard at Cambridge under Major Loammi Baldwin on 15 May 1775. He served in this regiment through December 1775.

Stephen was a sergeant in Captain Ezra Badlam’s Company in Colonel Loammi Baldwin’s 26th Regiment from January to June 1776.

Stephen married Sarah Bailey on 21 October 1773 or 1776. Their known children were:

  • Elizabeth Noyes was born in Newbury on 25 October 1777.
  • Stephen Bailey was born in Haverhill on 29 March 1779 and married Clarissa Willis.
  • Sarah/Sally was born on 17 February 1781 and married Jahleel Willis.
  • Clarissa was born on 11 October 1782 and died on 29 January 1788.
  • Moses Noyes was born on 18 October 1784 and married Hannah G. Sanborn.
  • Joseph was born on 29 August 1786 and married Lucretia Wetherbee.
  • Clarissa was born on 28 April 1788 and married John S. Sanborn.
  • Sophia was born on 7 February 1790.
  • An unnamed child was born in December 1791 and died on 3 March 1792.

Stephen moved to Haverhill, New Hampshire, in 1778.

The Patriot died on 29 April 1825 and was buried in Horse Meadow Cemetery in North Haverhill, New Hampshire.
