Recorded Military Service John Moore enlisted as a private in Captain John Mott's Company of the First Regiment, Hunterdon County, New Jersey Militia. He was promoted to Sergeant on September 29, 1777. Four hundred acres of land were surveyed for him in Northampton County, Pennsylvania on July 1, 1784.

The Patriot John Moore is the 2nd great-grandson of the Rev. John Moore and Margaret Howell who where early colonists of Long Island, New York. Edward H. Howell, Margaret’s father and John’s 3rd great grandfather, is one of Long Island’s noted early founders. Edward sold his estate known as Westbury Manor in Marsh Gibbon, Buckingham, England before bringing his family and his fortune to Long Island, New York.
The Patriot John Moore’s parents were “Captain” John Moore and Joanna Prudden. “Captain” John Moore was a veteran of the French and Indian Wars and Joanna’s grandfather the Purtitan minister, the Rev. Peter Prudden founded the First Church of Christ in 1639 in Milford, Connecticut. Former First Lady Barbara Bush is another well-known descendant of the Rev. Peter Prudden.
Second cousins of the Patriot John Moore include the Rev. Benjamin Moore who was the Episcopal Bishop of New York, Rector of Trinity Church, and President of Columbia College. Benjamin’s son, Clement Clark Moore, is best known as the author of A Visit from St. Nicholas (The Night Before Christmas) and is a 2nd cousin once removed of the Patriot John Moore.
In about 1774, The Patriot John Moore married Sarah Carpenter daughter of Henry Carpenter of Ewing, New Jersey. Henry Carpenter is believed to be a descendant of William Carpenter, Jr. who was an early colonist of Rehoboth, Massachusettes. John and Sarah had the following children: • Captain Charles, born about 1774 in Trenton, New Jersey. He first married Susan Byers in about 1799 and second married Mary Coates on October 6, 1801, at the First Baptist Church, Philadelphia. Mary Coates was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1772, she died April 12, 1846 in Batavia, Ohio. Charles died June 15, 1844 in Batavia, Ohio. Charles served in the Second Company, 84th Regiment, 1st Brigade, 1st Division of the Pennsylvania Militia in the War of 1812. . • John Carpenter Moore was born in 1791. On February 13, 1811 he married Elizabeth Howell Guild. • Elizabeth Moore was born in 1778 in Trenton, New Jersey. On November 23, 1805, she married the Rev. Asa Dunham. • Sarah Moore was born in 1789. On April 17, 1805 she married George Hunt in Hunterdon, New Jersey. George Hunt died on December 2, 1852. Sarah died on June I, 1855 in Clermont County, Ohio. Refer to The Descendants of the Rev. John Moore, for more in-depth details of the Moore family roots and their aligned families roots. John Moore was born June 6, 1746 in Hopewell, Mercer County, New Jersey., son of John Moore and Keziah Phillips. On December 22, 1774 he married Sarah Carpenter. Their children include sons Charles and John Carpenter Moore. He enlisted as a private in Capt. John Mott's Company, First Regiment, Hunterdon County, New Jersey in the Revolution, and on Sept. 29, 1777, was promoted to Sergeant. Four hundred acres of land were surveyed for him in Northampton County, Pennsylvania, July 1, 1784.
He died March 17, 1815 in Hunterdon, New Jersey.
