Author: Ronald John Barker
Jacob Moon, the 6th great grandfather of Compatriot Ronald J. Barker, was born in 1717 in New Kent Virginia to Steven and Phillis Moon. When he reached adulthood, he purchased land in Albemarle and later Bedford Counties in Virginia. He was not only a Patriot, but he was the scion of at least four Patriots and a daughter who was the wife of a patriot.

Jacob supplied a horse and some beef to the Patriot cause. More importantly, four of his five sons are documented patriots. (1) Son William, 5th great grandfather of Ron Barker, signed the Virginia Loyalty Oath on August 23, 1777. (2) Son Archelaus was appointed a 1st Lieutenant in the 14th Virginia Regiment December 23, 1776 and served until his resignation November 13, 1777.

Sons Jacob and Pleasant made the ultimate sacrifice. (3) Pleasant was a Sergeant in the 14th Virginia and the company payroll states he died September 4, 1777, probably of disease, as he was sick in 2 prior pay records. (4) Son Jacob, Jr. was Paymaster of the 14th Virginia under Colonel Charles Lynch. Jacob Jr. served as Paymaster from at least December 1777 until his death in March 1781.

Jacob, Jr.’s sister Sarah’s husband Michael Gilbert was a Lieutenant in the same regiment.

According to a pension record cited in the book “Long Obstinate and Bloody” at page 123 “Capt. Jacob Moon (Jnr) ‘was mortally wounded, having received a ball through the left side that he caught in his hand as it passed through his right side, exclaiming to one Michael Gilbert, his brother-in-law, that he had received a mortal wound.’ Thomas Brown, Edward Burress, and Nathanael Harris carried Moon from the field.” He died 2 or 3 days later.

After the war, Jacob Moon, Sr. moved to Georgia with several of his children, including William and Sarah (Sally) and her husband Michael Gilbert. Jacob died in late 1793 in Greene County, Georgia and Michael was administrator of his estate.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
