Author: Mark Andrew Davis
Thomas Montgomery was born about 1750 in York County, Pennsylvania.
He married Frances “Fanny” Pollard on about 26 July 1787 in Amherst County, Virginia. She made an application for a pension after the Patriot’s death.
His known children:
William was born on 20 November 1786 and married Sarah Rattan.
John was born on 10 February 1790 and married Margaret James.
Thomas Jr. was born about 1788. He was single, and his mother lived with him in the 1850 census.
Nancy was born about 1810 and married George Taylor.
Thomas enlisted sometime in September 1776 as a Private in the Company of Captain Van Swearingen of Westmoreland County under the command of Colonel Aeneas Mackay of the 8th Pennsylvania Regiment. In April 1777, he transferred to Colonel Morgan’s Rifle Regiment, and he was in the Battle of Edge Hill and the Battles of Saratoga. He served with Morgan until June 1778, when he rejoined the 8th Pennsylvania, then commanded by Colonel Daniel Broadhead. He was discharged in September 1779.
He applied for a pension from Nelson County, Kentucky, in 1832.
He made his Last Will and Testament on 4 September 1829 in Washington County, Kentucky. He lists his heirs as “my wife” and his “youngest child,” Nancy. He also mentions “my two other” daughters [unnamed], sons William and Thomas. He does not mention his son John, who is mentioned in his Pension application. Regarding the two unnamed daughters, several females married in Washington County in the time before the death of the Patriot. It would require much more research to try and identify any potential matches.
His wife, Francis, says he died on 24 September 1833 in Washington County, Kentucky. However, the Treasury Department says he died on 30 August 1834, with the last payment going to his son John. There is a Find-a-Grave memorial for the Patriot, but it doesn’t show a stone or any source material to support an actual burial at Saint Rose Cemetery.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
