Peter Mills was born Oct. 14, 1741 in Kent, Litchfield, CT and died Mar. 9, 1829 in Kent, Litchfield, CT. He married Rebecca Marsh about 1760 in Kent, CT and they had the following children: Margaret, Abigail, Clarissa, John, Peter, Jr., John, Esther, Edmond and Edmond.
Peter Mills’ military service began when he enlisted from Jul. 6 to Dec. 21, 1775 as a 2nd Lt. under Col. Charles Webb’s 7th CT Regt., in Capt. Isaac Bostwick’s 7th Company. Peter marched from Litchfield, CT to Hartford, CT for a few days and then went down the Connecticut River to Rocky Hill. The Company continued onto (Old) Saybrook, then to (Old) Lyme and camped at New London for 5-6 weeks. During this time in New London they marched to Stonington Point, CT to stop Capt. Wallace’s ship ‘Rose’ from landing on Aug. 30, 1775 and returned to New London, CT. They marched to Saybrook to guard Lt. Gov. Matthew Griswold’s Home at Black Hall until Gen. Arnold went to Canada, then the company returned to New London. After their stay was complete, they marched to Winter Hill Camp just outside Boston, MA. They traveled by Norwich, Stonington, Norridge Landing, Providence, RI, Roxbury, MA, Cambridge, MA and Boston, MA. Peter Mills was discharged at Boston Camps under Gen. Sullivan’s Brigade.
In Oct. 1776 to Mar. 1777, 1st Lt. Peter Mills served in Capt. Jirah Swift’s Co. under Col. Charles Burrall’s Connecticut Regt. The Regiment was sent north to support Arnold and Montgomery in Canada, via Albany, NY, Ft. Miller, Ft. George, Lake Champlain, Ticonderoga, Crown Point, Chambly Canada, then retreated and wintered at Mt. Independence.
Capt. Peter Mills was in the CT Militia under Col. Samuel Canfield. In the Spring 1777 he was stationed at Fishkill, NY on the North River (Hudson River) for one month. Capt. Peter Mills in the CT Militia is on a payroll for serving against Tyron’s Raid at Danbury, CT during Apr. 25, 1777 to Apr. 28, 1777. In the Fall of 1777 his Company was stationed at the Saw Pitts, CT, Horseneck, CT and Fishkill, NY.
In Dec. 1777 to Apr. 1778, Capt. Peter Mills served under Col. John Mead’s Regt. guarding Rye Bridge, CT near Horseneck, CT and the inhabitants in Westchester, NY. They also marched to New Rochelle, East Chester, New Castle, White Plains, NY and other places.
Capt. Peter Mills is on a payroll of serving in the Connecticut Militia, from Apr. 1, 1779 to Nov. 1, 1779. On Jul. 5, 1779 Capt. Peter Mills responded to the New Haven, CT, alarm. Between Jul. to Sep. 1779 Peter’s Company marched to Horseneck through New Milford, Danbury, Redding, Wilton and Stanford, CT. At Stanford, CT, they stopped the landing of the British.
