Matthias Mueller was born October 18, 1743 in the Tulpehocken area of Lancaster County (now Berks County), Pa. He was the son of Johann Jacob and Catharine Charlotte Mueller who came from the Palatinate, Germany. Matthias’s parents and his three older siblings arrived at the port of Philadelphia on September 19, 1732 on the ship "Johnson."
Matthias Mueller was married four times, with all of his wives bearing him children. Matthias was first married in about 1765 to Susannah Catharina Mueller (1740-1777), daughter of Michael and Catharina Mueller. Matthias and Susannah Catharina were the parents seven children: Maria Barbara, Maria Magdalena, Johannes, Catharina Charlotte, Maria Elisabeth, Anna Maria, and Susanna Catharina. After the death of his first wife he married Catharina “the widow Aulenbach” on May 14, 1777, recorded at Christ Little Tulpehocken Church. Matthias and Catharina were the parents of five children: Matthias, Seville, Christiana, Jacob and Phillip. After Catharina died in 1782, Matthias married his third wife Mary Elizabeth. Matthias and Mary Elizabeth were the parents of three children: Margaretha, George and Conrad. Mary Elizabeth died in 1789, after which Matthias Mueller married his fourth wife Anna Maria Moyer (1753-1815). Anna Maria was the widow of Peter Schaffer/Shaver. Matthias and Anna Maria Mueller were the parents of two children: Michael and Mary “Polly”. All of Matthias Mueller’s seventeen children grew to adulthood and married.
Matthias Mueller was a farmer / leather tanner in Tulpehocken Twp., Berks County, Pa. About 1794 he and his fourth wife Anna Maria and many of his children relocated to Fort Run, near Timberville, Rockingham County, Virginia. Only Matthias’s three oldest children remained in Tulpehocken Twp. The remaining were Maria Barbara wife of Ludwig Peiffer, Maria Magdalena wife of Friederick Maier and Johannes. Matthias started buying land in the Timberville area of Virginia and by the time of his death in 1805 he owned over 1,000 acres. Matthias and Anna Maria Mueller are buried at the Rader Lutheran Church Cemetery, near Timberville, Rockingham County, Va.
Matthias served as a private in Captain Battorf’s Company, Berks County, Pennsylvania Militia during the Revolutionary War.
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
