William Meeker was born in Northfield, Essex County, New Jersey in 1745, the son of Timothy Meeker and Desire Cory. William married Hannah Tichenor January 20, 1766 and had 10 children – 7 sons and 3 daughters.


During the Revolutionary War, William served as a private in the 1st Essex County Militia and fought at the Battle of Springfield, New Jersey on June 23, 1780. William fought alongside his father Timothy, eight of his brothers, five brothers-in-law and six nephews.

William died November 14, 1790 in New Providence, Essex County, New Jersey and his burial site is unknown.

It is also noteworthy that William Meeker was the 2nd cousin once removed of George Washington.
