Timothy Meeker was born in Elizabethtown, Essex County, New Jersey in 1708, son of Thomas Meeker and Mary Ball Fox. Timothy was married 3 times: Sarah Pierson 1718-1738, Hannah Munn 1708-1740 and Desire Cory 1719-1793 and had one son and daughter with Sarah Pierson and 9 sons and 5 daughters with Desire Cory. At the age of 23 Timothy bought a farm in what is now known as Springfield, New Jersey and in 1745 sold the farm and bought a large tract of land in Livingston, New Jersey which he farmed until his death.
The first mention of his contribution to the Revolution was on July 29, 1776 when The New York Gazette and Weekly Mercury made note of Timothy as “an old gentleman between sixty and seventy doing duty in the Militia near Newark, New Jersey”. The paper further states that “he had about fifteen children living, nine of them serving in the Continental Army from Privates to Captains”. Sources from the time represent Timothy being both strong of character and of stature being over six feet tall. Timothy is best known for his service in the New Jersey Militia where he fought on June 23, 1780 at the age of 72 in the Battle of Springfield, New Jersey alongside numerous family members.
Timothy died December 22, 1798 and is buried at the Northfield Baptist Cemetery in Livingston, New Jersey. His tombstone reads “A soldier of the Rev. War” with 9 sons, 6 grandsons and 5 sons-in-law.
It is also noteworthy that Timothy Meeker and George Washington were 2nd cousins with common great grandparents of Colonel William Ball and Hannah Atherold of Virginia.
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
